If you’ve ever tried Middle Eastern food, chances are you’ve come across za’atar, a fragrant, earthy, and tangy spice mix that’s at the heart of so many dishes. But what exactly is it?
Za’atar is a traditional blend of dried thyme, sesame seeds, and sumac, mixed with a touch of salt. It’s been a staple in Jordanian and Levantine kitchens for centuries, used to season bread, dips, meats, and vegetables.
Every family and region has its own special twist, which makes za’atar both familiar and unique wherever you taste it.
The flavor is unlike anything else, it’s nutty from the sesame, zesty from the sumac, and beautifully aromatic from the herbs. The most classic way to enjoy it is by mixing it with olive oil and spreading it over warm bread, known as manakeesh. But it’s also amazing sprinkled on salads, yogurt, roasted potatoes, eggs, or even avocado toast.
At Aya’s Blend, our za’atar is handcrafted in small batches using a traditional Jordanian recipe. It’s more than just a spice, it’s a taste of heritage, culture, and comfort, now ready to be enjoyed in Canadian kitchens.
